New York City in the winter tends to attract a lot of celebrities. One of the main reasons: New York Fashion Week. Designers, buyers and future fashionistas alike all line up for a glimpse of what will be in style for the coming Fall season. So it should come as no surprise to see Tamara Mellon, founder of Jimmy Choo Shoes, front and center in the thick of the action.
In the 1990’s, while working as an accessories editor for British Vogue, Ms. Mellon (formerly married to Mellon bank heir Matthew Taylor Mellon III) struck up a relationship with a Malaysian be-spoke shoemaker named Jimmy Choo, in London’s East End. Recognizing the potential for development of high-end designer accessories, Tamara Mellon proposed working together with Mr. Choo to launch a ready-to-wear shoe company. With a quick loan from Tamara’s father, the Jimmy Choo brand was born in 1996. A worldwide shoe sensation soon followed, and before long Jimmy Choo shoes were being worn on the red carpet by celebrities like Beyonce Knowles and Reece Witherspoon, and on the feet of Sarah Jessica Parker, as a regular part of Sex and the City.
Always looking ahead, Ms. Mellon bought out her cobbler partner in recent years, and ultimately Tamara herself sold controlling interest in the business to British Private Equity firm Towerbrook Capital Partners. Today Tamara Mellon maintains creative control of the business, along with her design partner Sandra Choi. The brand continues to grow and has plans to open 3 boutiques in Europe this year.
Pictured here, Tamara Mellon, and boyfriend actor Christian Slater, head to NYC’s Waverly Inn, for dinner after attending the Halston runway show. Both dressed elegantly, Christian Slater wore a dark suit, and Tamara wore a grey satin toga style gown. Of course she had a Jimmy Choo clutch and gladiator style sandals from her brand as well. She wore simple yellow gold hoop earrings, and an 18k yellow gold Cartier Pasha watch. The timepiece features a bezel set with round cut diamonds, is oversized and on a bracelet. A subtle but stylish choice for a woman with an eye for fashion!
