Olga Kurylenko: Quantum Leap?
|
As the latest James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, is set to open, fans of 007 not only await the arrival of the heroic MI6 agent, they also eagerly anticipate the launch of the next Bond girl. The role of a Bond girl is typically a high profile part that can be given to an already established actress (Halle Berry, Ursula Andress, Teri Hatcher), or it can be seen as a role that could potentially catapult an up and coming actress (Eva Green) to stardom. Ukrainian born actress and model Olga Kurylenko, a relative unknown in the U.S., is hoping that her role as Bond girl Camille, played opposite of this film’s Bond, Daniel Craig, will in fact launch her into mainstream Hollywood.
While in previous James Bond films the role of the Bond girl has been that of a sex object and love interest, often with a comical and suggestive name, in Quantum of Solace, this is really not the case at all. Could James Bond be growing up? Or do the writers think the audience has outgrown the limitations of such vapid characters?
In Quantum of Solace, Olga Kurylenko plays one of the first Bond girls NOT to be seduced by the British Secret Agent. In fact, Camille is a strong woman with her own agenda operating along side Bond, who is still grieving the loss of the woman he loved. Quantum of Solace is in fact a sequel to Daniel Craig’s previous outing as 007, Casino Royale. In Quantum of Solace, Bond is still mourning the death of his love Vesper Lynd. So for perhaps the first time in history, Olga Kurylenko attempts to transform the image of a Bond girl to be seen almost as an equal to the MI6 agent: strong, independent and on her own mission. Will such a character take off? Will audiences enjoy seeing a female along side the hero without there being any sexual innuendo? Time will tell!
Whether her character is considered a sex symbol or a strong determined woman, there is no denying that Olga Kurylenko is beautiful. Seen here at the film’s Premiere in Berlin, Olga wears a strapless black evening gown topped off with a black cardigan, and sophisticated diamond drop earrings. Her look is clean, elegant and timeless, almost reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn. Indeed she seems to embody the next generation of Bond girls
Daniel Craig has suggested that in the future, he thinks Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicole Kidman would make great Bond girls. Do you agree?
