Madonna is someone who is always full of surprises. She is, after all, the master of re-invention. So to see her at the Cannes Film Festival, reduced to tears as she presented her documentary film I Am Because We Are, showed us yet another side of Madonna. Could this Hard Candy superstar, actually have a soft center?
I Am Because We Are is a work of passion for Madonna. She says her life was forever changed, after visiting the small South African country of Malawi, back in 2006. Her film documents the devastating poverty in a country where millions of children have been orphaned by families dying from HIV and AIDS. It is a country where children are raising other children, and it’s a story Madonna wanted to be sure the world would hear. At the star studded and luxury laden Cannes Film Festival, her film was in stark contrast to the event's surroundings. There couldn’t be two more different worlds. Of all people, it was Madonna, bringing a heavy dose of reality, to the sugar coated world in Cannes.
Seen here walking the red carpet for her film, Madonna is wearing a flapper inspired gown from Chanel Haute Couture. She was wearing heels so sky-high that she needed assistance twice to remain upright! Madonna also wore exquisite jewels from Chopard – a triple strand necklace of diamonds totaling 85 carats, valued at $1.3 million. Now that’s some serious candy! Madonna has been a fan of Chopard jewelry for some time now. In fact, Chopard has created several unique diamond pave pieces for her, which she has worn in her videos, and on the cover of her latest album, Hard Candy.
At almost 50 years of age, Madonna continues to evolve and become even more intriguing. Which image is suiting her more these days? Conservative philanthropist or risk-taking entertainer? Seems to me, she is mastering both, beautifully.
