IWC Aquatimer 2009 Watch Collection
Among the most significant SIHH 2009 news from IWC Schaffhausen was an updated Aquatimer collection comprising five technically impressive sports watches. This revised IWC Aquatimer collection presents certain signature technical and design elements, including 44mm cases with a quick strap change system requiring no tools, and a unidirectional rotating bezel that departs from the internal, crown-operated versions of the previous generation Aquatimer line.

Technical exemplar of the 2009 IWC Aquatimer collection is the IWC Aquatimer Deep Two watch. Offered in stainless steel with a matching bracelet or a rubber strap, the Deep Two continues where the now-legendary IWC GST Deep One left off. This latter model made a splash among collectors with a never-before-seen mechanical depth gauge--now, this remarkable technology is once again united with an IWC dive watch. In short, the IWC Aquatimer Deep Two watch employs a wheel train that converts water pressure into a precise motion on the depth indicator. Water resistance is rated for 120 meters.

The 2009 IWC Aquatimer Automatic 2000 watch masters the ocean depths. Outfitted with a screw-down crown and screw-locked caseback, this deep diver can descend to 2,000 meters, a level of water resistance required by the most demanding professionals. Large, exceptionally visible squared-off hour markers and hands with contrasting yellow and white luminous applications assure faultless ease of use in poor or non-existing lighting. A stop center seconds function and rapidly adjustable date display completes this stylish and functional luxury dive watch.

The luxurious power of 18-karat red gold makes its first appearance in the Aquatimer collection, as well. The 18K red gold Aquatimer Chronograph, completed by a rubber strap, utilizes the superb IWC 89360 caliber that first saw use in 2008's Da Vinci Chronograph watch. Governed by a traditional column-wheel, this ingenious mechanical movement with the double-pawl Pellaton winding system and a flyback complication positions the chrono hours and minutes on a single subdial, resulting in an elegant presentation with the added benefit of improved functionality. Despite the luxurious presence of this watch, water resistance is assured to a depth of 120 meters.

Well known to many is IWC's work with organizations committed to the protection of Earth's ecosystems. The relationship between IWC Schaffhausen and the Charles Darwin Foundation is given emphasis by a special timepiece--the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Galapagos Islands. Boasting the same technical specifications as the new IWC Aquatimer Chronograph, the Galapagos Islands watch features a protective rubber case coating and an engraved commemorative back that proudly displays the animal symbolic of the Galapagos Islands--the giant tortoise. The IWC Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Galapagos Islands is water resistant to 120 meters; its self-winding mechanical movement incorporates a rapidly adjustable date and day display, in addition to the chronograph function with 12-hour and 30-minute counters.
