In collaboration with New York's Metropolitain Museum of Art, famed gold jewelry designer Gurhan Orhan has created a special collection of handcrafted jewelry to complement the summer exhibition Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul. As a crossroads of major trade routs, Afghanistan has a rich and diverse cultural history which exhibits influences from across the Asian continent. Featured in this special exhibit are pieces which bear influences from Greek, Near Eastern, Indian and Chinese cultures. The show is on view from June 23 through September 20th.
The items on display originate from four archaeological sites including Tillya Tepe. Amongst these extraordinary pieces are over 20,000 gold artifacts which were unearthed from two-thousand year old nomadic tombs. Collectively, these items are known as the Golden Hoard of Bactria and the group includes a staggering array of gold ornaments and jewelry designs.
In his inimitable style, Gurhan has developed a series of jewelry designs known as the Hidden Treasures Collection which are inspired by the artifacts on display in the exhibition. Using 24k gold and revived ancient tools and techniques, these special jewelry creations are a fabulous supplement to the relics included in the show. Accented by lapis lazuli, turquoise and carnelian, the designs in this new Gurhan collection evoke the colors and stones used by the ancient craftsmen.
