Girard Perregaux Tip of the Week #56
Whenever a watch falls to the ground, the balance is subject to a shock loading equivalent of 5000 times its own weight.

To dampen the shock loads to which watch mechanisms can be subjected, shock absorbing systems have been developed. These are based on a design principle combining two jewels (synthetic ruby) where the jewel on the counter pivot is subject to the action of a spring whose flexible action enables transverse and perpendicular loads to be absorbed. These systems also help to make the movement more efficient. The combined jewel system improves oil retention, which in turn enhances lubrication to the points of contact between the jewels and the pivot.
