Often being associated with eternal spring, the Emerald is an exquisite gemstone of vivid greens. Emeralds have fascinated people for centuries. The earliest finds of Emeralds were near the Red See in Egypt. Emeralds were mined by Egyptians and it is legend that the Emerald was the most favored stone of Cleopatra. Emeralds were also important to the Aztecs and Incas of South America. They believed the stone to be holy and give them clairvoyance. Indian maharajas and maharanis had emeralds in their treasure chest, as well as having ancient text engraved on the special gems. Emeralds are important to Middle Eastern countries including Iran and Turkey where Emeralds adorn palaces and sacred artifacts. Ancient Romans admired Emeralds because green is the color of Venus the goddess of beauty and love.
Emeralds possess many interesting traits that make them very popular. Emeralds are from the family of beryls. Pure beryl is colorless, but there are variations that differ in their color. Chromium and vanadium give Emeralds their unique green hews which range from light to deep grassy green. Interestingly, the elements that combine to form Emeralds are not in the same area of the Earth’s crust, but tectonic processes the elements are brought together, truly making Emeralds rare and spectacular.
Because of this process, Emeralds are known to have small fissures and inclusions called “jardin”, which is a term that compares the inclusions to foliage. It is very rare to fine deep colored stones with few or no inclusions. Though Emeralds score between 7-8 on the Moh’s scale, they can be fragile due to the cracks and inclusions. Emeralds are very beautiful and valuable. The price of a top quality Emerald can be much higher than a Diamond. Emeralds are traditionally mined in Columbia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Brazil, India and Russia. Emeralds are truly spectacular and sought after, so make sure that you purchase your Emeralds from a reputable jeweler.
