Drew Barrymore: Garden of Edie
|
When you think of Drew Barrymore, you don’t immediately think of her as being a serious actress. She has had tremendous success starring in and producing romantic comedies such as He’s Just Not That Into You, and girl power hits like Charlie’s Angels, but now Drew Barrymore is taking a chance on drama…and she’s hoping you will take her seriously.
Starring opposite Jessica Lange in HBO’s Grey Gardens, Drew Barrymore plays the role of Edith Bouvier Beale. In this dramatic but true riches-to-rags movie, Lange and Barrymore play mother and daughter, Big Edie and Little Edie (relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis); charming eccentrics living an isolated and reclusive life in East Hampton. Spanning a period of 40 years, both Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange transform themselves from glamorous New Yorkers in beautiful couture, to barely recognizable caricatures living in squalor, with matted hair and gaudy clothing.
Drew Barrymore enjoyed the period costumes in the film, and brought some of her own 1930’s style to the red carpet at the New York premier of Grey Gardens, held recently at the Ziegfeld Theatre In a nude colored custom made beaded gown from Alberto Ferretti and her hair in Marcel finger waves, Drew looked very Old Hollywood. Wearing 2 exquisite coral cocktail rings, and a show-stopping pearl floral headpiece (complete with veil), all from jeweler Fred Leighton, Drew was the very image of a glamorous film star from days gone by. On the red carpet, Drew stated “I love glamour. I love when women stepped it up a notch. I want to have fun with fashion.” Finishing her look with a vintage beaded clutch, and Roger Vivier heels, Drew Barrymore certainly looks like she is having fun with fashion!
Do you think Drew Barrymore’s portrayal of Edith Bouvier Beale will open the door for more serious acting roles for her?
