Ruby rings are no longer reserved for dinner parties and evening wear. The recent increase in popularity of ruby rings is due in part to a plethora of new jewelry designers creating ruby ring designs. Rubies are part of the colored precious gemstone family which includes sapphires and emeralds. Rubies historically have been associated as the birthstone for people born in the month of July. Rubies are part of the Corundum family of minerals, which also includes sapphires (blue, pink, yellow and other colors). Most rubies that are mined today come from Burma, and they are also mines in Madagascar, Thailand, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Kenya.
When choosing a ruby for your ring be sure to work with a professional jeweler as many rubies today are “treated” after they are mined. These treatments include heat treating to improve the clarity and color, dye injecting to help intensify the color, and applying coatings to mask fractures in the surface of the stone. The quality of the stone becomes more important as you begin to consider the diamonds and setting you want to use for your ring.
Diamonds are a perfect compliment to rubies in a three stone ring because the two colors, red and white, both contrast and compliment each other so well. When choosing the perfect combination of rubies and diamonds in your three stone ring, understand that large rubies are harder to find that large diamonds. The overall production of rubies worldwide is much smaller than diamonds. This makes it difficult to find large, hi quality rubies. Instead focus on the quality and shape of the ruby and the cut, color and clarity of the diamonds set around it.
