Dev Patel may be the most talked about teenager in the world at the moment. The 18 year old British-born Indian actor is receiving awards and nominations for his portrayal as Jamal Malik in his first ever film, Slumdog Millionaire. Dev is being honored alongside such seasoned Hollywood heavyweights as Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Robert Downey Jr. and Heath Ledger. All this and he still lives at home with his parents!
Slumdog Millionaire is a heartbreaking and hopeful film about a young boy born in the slums of Mumbai, just trying to survive and fulfill his dream of reuniting with his childhood sweetheart Latika, played by Indian born model Freida Pinto. In a city of nearly 18 million, Dev Patel’s character feels that if he appears on the country’s most popular television show, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, his long lost love may see him and find her way back to him. This bittersweet story has won rave reviews and along with its star Dev Patel, is cleaning up both at the box office and the awards shows. This is the film everyone will be talking about at the Academy Awards this year!
To promote Slumdog Millionaire stateside, Dev has appeared on every talk show from the Today Show to David Letterman, proving himself to be incredibly humble, well spoken, enthusiastic and very mature for his 18 years. Even his style is mature: Seen here, he is wearing a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Squadra watch, on a black leather strap. This beautifully understated and elegant watch suits him perfectly, and is an interesting if unusual choice for a teenage boy.
