Charlize Theron: The High Price of Celebrity
|
Oh the glamorous life of a celebrity; fame, fortune and all kinds of designer and luxury brands, wanting you to endorse their products. Sounds simple doesn’t it? Even though celebrities can afford to BUY these items, (ie. their Oscar gowns), they often wear items they don’t have to purchase, with an understanding that the celebrity will bring attention to the brand, and thus, an elevated status, and even more robust sales. Sound like a fair deal and one that is easy to comply with? Not so, for Charlize Theron. Sometimes celebrity comes with a price. A high price.
Charlize Theron is a luxury brand’s dream: a much sought after actress, with an Academy Award (Best Actress in her 2004 film, Monster), and a statuesque beauty, Charlize is nearly always on Hollywood’s best dressed list. Basically, we want what SHE’s selling! Most brands would love to have Charlize Theron photographed wearing their product. Swiss watchmaker Raymond Weil even went so far as to hire Ms. Theron as the ‘new face’ of Raymond Weil watches for the company’s ad campaigns. The stipulation of her reported $20 million dollar endorsement: To wear Raymond Weil timepieces, exclusively, from October 2005 to December 2006. However, it would seem that simultaneous to this endorsement deal, Charlize Theron also made a deal to become the ‘face’ of Christian Dior perfume. Hence the problem: The Dior brand is also a maker of luxury timepieces, and in March 2006, Charlize Theron was photographed wearing a watch from the Christian Dior line, at a press event.
Raymond Weil has filed suit against Charlize Theron for breach of contract and is seeking a repayment of the rumored $20 million dollars she received. According to the US District Court, Ms. Theron was well aware of the stipulations of her agreement not to wear a watch from a competing brand, and initialed her contract of understanding in 10 different places. The case is now headed to Federal Court.
Seen here at a recent premier of her new movie Battle in Seattle, it seems Charlize Theron has opted to wear no watch at all!
Wouldn’t you find it rather easy to comply with the Raymond Weil non-compete agreement for a cool $20 million???? Do you think this is a case of greed, or an “honest misunderstanding”?
